Practice tests are a critical part of your GRE prep program. Taking a full-length exam gives you the most realistic testing experience to prepare you for the big day.
And the very, very best practice tests come directly from the ETS.
In this article, we’ll provide you with downloads of all the official free GRE practice tests there are. We’ll also give you information on how to buy other official full-length GRE practice tests and explain whether or not they overlap with the free materials.

Full-Length Free GRE Practice Tests
There are several different options out there for official free GRE practice tests, all created or approved by ETS.
POWERPREP Online
POWERPREP Online includes two official practice tests, plus additional official practice questions. You can use this free online program for a realistic computer-based GRE testing experience. To use PowerPrep, you’ll need to make sure your computer meets the following requirements:
Quick side note: we've created the world's leading online GRE prep program that adapts to you and your strengths and weaknesses. Not sure what to study? Confused by how to improve your score? We give you minute by minute guide.
You don't NEED a prep program to get a great GRE score. But we believe PrepScholar is the best GRE prep program available right now, especially if you find it hard to organize your study schedule and don't know what to study.
Click here to learn how you can improve your GRE score by 7 points, guaranteed.
Pros: PowerPrep is the closest you can get to the testing environment you’ll have on test day for the computer-based GRE. This makes it great realistic GRE practice.
If you will be taking the GRE with accommodations, PowerPrep for PC also allows you to incorporate in things like extra time, screen magnifiers, screen readers, and so on.
Cons: You have to have internet access and be online to use the program, and you have to re-download it after 90 days (although it’s still free).
Also, you can get away with not sticking strictly to the time limits by fiddling with the accommodations settings or pausing longer than allowed between sections (since there’s no in-between-sections timer).
GRE Practice Test PDFs
In addition to PowerPrep, there are two free GRE practice test PDFs you can download.
Both of these official GRE practice test PDFs contain substantial overlap with the two PowerPrep tests: the test in the first PDF overlaps with PowerPrep practice test 1 and the test in the second PDF overlaps with PowerPrep practice test 2. If you’re taking the computer-based GRE, you should definitely take the PowerPrep tests first before looking at the PDFs (so you’re taking the practice tests fresh).
Pros: Once you’ve taken both the PowerPrep tests, there still are enough unique questions in the PDFs that it’s worth downloading them for extra practice.
Cons: These tests are not as good as the PowerPrep software for preparation for the computer-based GRE, so you should not use them as a substitute unless you absolutely have to (for instance, if you can’t use PowerPrep on your computer).
Old GRE Tests
One final avenue of official free GRE practice tests is preparation material for the old (pre-2011) GRE. These are for the most studious of test-takers who want every last advantage on the GRE.
One full old GRE practice test can be found in the old practice book ETS had available on their website for the old GRE from 2004 up through early 2010.
You can use all of the Quantitative Reasoning questions from this GRE practice test; however, be aware that these questions focus less on data interpretation and real-life scenarios than current GRE Quantitative Reasoning questions.
The Verbal Reasoning section has undergone a more substantive change, which means not all the questions from this old GRE practice test pdf are useful for current GRE Verbal studying. Specifically, only the following questions should still be used for Verbal Reasoning practice:
All the other Verbal Reasoning questions on this test are either types not asked on the current GRE (antonyms, analogies), or are in forms too different from the current GRE to be good practice.
![]()
An example of this second type of question is the double-blank sentence completion questions on this test. While these questions are asked on the current GRE, the answer choice format on the practice test (5 multiple-choice answers that pair up possible word choices for the double-blanks) is different from the current GRE, which gives multiple answer choices to choose from for each word blank.
Finally, the Analytical Writing prompts in this GRE PDF are different from the ones currently in use, so don’t bother writing essays in response to them. Fortunately, all the official GRE Issues and Arguments prompts that will ever appear on the GRE are free and publicly available, courtesy of ETS – read more on that in our complete GRE writing prompts article.
Purchase Official GRE Practice Tests
In addition to the above free GRE practice tests, you can purchase additional official practice tests (or collections of practice questions).
Official GRE Guide
Cost: $27 physical book (3rd edition), $22 ebook (2nd edition)
If you’re buying GRE practice tests, ETS’s Official Guide to the GRE revised General Test (newest edition published 2016) is by far the best value. It contains two GRE practice tests, and except for the Analytical Writing sections (which contain prompts from the Issues and Arguments pool of topics, as would be expected), the practice tests in the book are completely different from any other official GRE practice tests.
The Official Guide also has some unique practice questions, separate from the practice tests, which you can use for targeted studying. Official GRE questions are the best study resource for the GRE, making this book very valuable for use in your prep.
The paper version of this book’s 2nd edition has the same practice tests plus a CD-ROM with the two PowerPrep practice tests, which is useful if you have an older computer without internet access and with a CD drive.
POWERPREP PLUS Online
Cost: $39.95 for each practice test. You may only take each test one time per purchase and your access to the test (and your results) expires after 90 days.
As of August 2017, ETS now offers two paid online adaptive official GRE practice tests under the name POWERPREP PLUS Online. Like the paper practice tests in the Official Guide to the GRE, the two PowerPrep Plus tests contain almost entirely never-before published questions (the exceptions being the two Analytical Writing questions and one Verbal question that’s very similar to a question appearing in the Official Guide).
In addition to containing all-new adaptive practice tests and giving you a score and the correct answers to the Verbal and Quantitative questions like the free PowerPrep program, PowerPrep Plus has two other benefits: scoring for both your Analytical Writing essays (via the official GRE e-rater computerized scorer used on the real GRE) and explanations for every answer.
Pros: As the only other adaptive official practice tests besides regular PowerPrep, the PowerPrep Plus tests might be good additional practice for students who want to hone their adaptive test-taking skills. And because there’s very little overlap between the questions on the PowerPrep Plus practice tests and any other official GRE practice material, these two practice tests are also a good source of additional official practice questions.
Cons: Cost. At $39.95 per test per use, PowerPrep Plus is by far the most expensive official GRE practice test option out there. The reason for the one-time-use-per-purchase setup is likely that ETS doesn’t want one person to purchase a practice test and then let multiple other people retake the test on their account (i.e. The Netflix Dilemma), but this does mean that you’re paying $40 for a one-time experience that you won’t even be able to review after three months.
Recommendation: Don’t bother with this unless you’ve exhausted all other official GRE practice questions and test options and still feel like you need more practice. And if you can manage to pool resources with a few friends, you can try to mine the tests for extra questions by taking each practice test three more times (once getting all questions wrong, once getting all of them right, and once getting them half wrong and half right) and seeing what new questions pop up in the second Verbal and Quantitative sections.
ScoreItNow! GRE Analytical Writing Scoring Service
Cost: $20 per set of two GRE Analytical Writing topics (plus six non-official topics the first time you sign up); essays must be submitted for feedback within six months of purchase date.
The ScoreItNow! service allows you to write two essays on official GRE prompts (either on two Analyze an Issue topics, two Analyze an Argument topics, or one of each) andget them scored by the official ETS e-rater software that grades essays on the real GRE.
Want to improve your GRE score by 7 points? We have the industry's leading GRE prep program. Built by world-class instructors with 99th percentile GRE scores, the program learns your strengths and weaknesses through machine learning data science, then customizes your prep program to you so you get the most effective prep possible.
Try our 5-day full access trial for free:
After you’ve completed the two official GRE essay tasks, you’ll have the choice to write essays on six additional ScoreItNow!-created essay topics (three meant to mimic Analyze an Issue topics and three similar to Analyze an Argument topics) and get those scored as well. For all the essays, you’ll receive “additional feedback,” although it’s unclear what precisely this means. You can purchase additional ScoreItNow! official GRE practice essay scorings in multiples of two.
Pros: According to an email communication I had with their support staff, ScoreItNow! has a total of six available topics that are taken from the official ETS GRE Writing topics pools (which means you can order the service up to three times and write on real GRE topics).
In theory, you could purchase this service once and use it in conjunction with PowerPrep Online for the ultimate realistic GRE practice test experience: write one “Analyze an Issue” essay and one “Analyze an Argument” essay in PowerPrep, but submit it to ScoreItNow! to get feedback on your essays!
The first time you buy the ScoreItNow! service, you also have the option to write essays and get reader commentary and scoring on“6 free bonus topics” (three unofficial “Analyze an Issue” and three unofficial “Analyze an Argument” prompts). While these prompts aren’t part of the GRE essay topic pools, writing practice essays in response will get you additional feedback on your writing from the e-rater scorer technology and ScoreItNow readers, which could be useful to you.
Cons: Cost. After the first time you buy the service (which supplies you with the scoring of 2 real and 6 unofficial GRE essays for $20), you’re essentially shelling out $10 per essay scoring. And with the advent of PowerPrep PLUS, it might make more sense to do that instead, since you’ll get to practice with a unique practice test as well as get your essays scored.
4 Strategies to Use Free GRE Practice Tests Effectively
Now that you’ve got lots of official questions to practice with, check out our top tips on the best ways to use them in your prep.
#1: Take the Practice GRE in the Same Format You’ll Be Taking Real GRE In
This means that if you’re taking the computer-based GRE, take a computer-based practice test; if you’re taking it on paper, use the paper practice tests.
Not only are the questions presented slightly differently on the paper-based GRE as compared to the computer-based GRE, but the timing and number of questions per section are different as well. There are 25 questions per section on the paper-based GRE, but only 20 on the computer-based GRE; there are also 5 minutes more per verbal and quantitative section on the paper-based GRE.
#2: Take the Test All at Once
Part of the ordeal of taking the GRE is lasting out the nearly 4-hour test. You’ll need stamina, and the only way to figure out how much the length of the test will affect you is by taking realistic practice tests. You might find out that you tend to make more careless math errors when you’re tired, or that your eyes tend to skip over sentences in reading comprehension passages when the Verbal Reasoning section comes at the end of the test.
This is all important information that you can then combat with a solid study plan, building up stamina and being mindful of your tendencies.
#3: Keep Strict Timing on Each Section
If you run out of time while using a non-computer-based GRE practice test, continue to answer questions but mark them as answered with extra time (maybe with “ET” or an asterisk next to them). You can then compare how many questions you answered correctly with extra time vs. in the timed section and determine if you have time management problems; if your raw score is more than 3 points different, you’ll need to work on time management.
Unfortunately, you can’t do this comparison with PowerPrep software unless at the beginning of the practice test you set up to have 1.5 or 2x time per section. However, then you might not notice when the normal time limit is up, so I’d advise against that approach.
#4: Review Your Answers
This means not just going over the test, seeing which questions you got wrong, and dismissing them, but digging into why you got the question wrong. Was the issue that you didn’t know how to solve the problem or answer the question? Lack of time? Careless error? Or another reason?
Keep a list of all the questions you get wrong, along with why you got them wrong, in a notebook or a file on your computer to study from.

Practice tests are one of the most important tools to use for GRE prep, but, unfortunately, many of the practice GREs available online aren’t high quality. When you study with a low-quality GRE practice test, you can actually end up lowering your GRE skills by studying topics you don’t need to be and neglecting the actual skills you should be studying.
Fortunately, in this guide we’ve collected all the best free GRE practice tests for you to use. In addition to explaining the pros and cons of each practice test, we also explain what makes a great GRE practice test and give tips on how to use practice tests when studying for the GRE.
What Makes a Good GRE Practice Test?
Before we look at the best free GRE practice tests, let’s first look at what makes a practice test great. There are many free practice GRE exams out there, ranging in quality from excellent to pretty terrible. In this section we go over the four qualities that all the best practice GREs share.
#1: High-Quality Questions
Above all, your free GRE test needs to have practice questions that are as close as possible to what you’ll see on the actual GRE. That means they are worded similarly, test the same concepts, have the same difficulty level, etc.
It’s not easy to consistently create high-quality practice GRE problems, and many free practice GREs have questions that aren’t all that close to what you’ll see on test day. If you use them for practice, it could cause you to study the wrong things for the GRE.
This is why official practice tests are the best free GRE practice tests to use. They’re made by the same people who make the actual GRE, so you can be sure the questions are high quality.

#2: Similar Format to the Real GRE
One common feature in many low-quality GRE practice tests is that they’re not actually tests, but rather short quizzes with 10 or twenty questions. GRE quizzes can definitely be a helpful study tool, but they don’t replace full-length GRE practice tests.
Hotline miami free download pc. The game has got some enthralling visuals and captivating sounds tracks. And the action has picked up the pace compared to the last part so the player needs to be more focused.
The GRE is a 3.5 hour, fast-paced exam, and you want to know exactly how a test of that length and intensity affects you well before you sit down to take the real test. Your practice GRE tests should have the same format as the real GRE. This means the same number of questions, same number of sections, same timing rules, etc.
The first section of the GRE will always be Analytical Writing, where you’ll have two 30-minute blocks to write two essays: “Analyze an Issue” and “Analyze an Argument.” The next five sections can occur in any order. They’ll include two sections of Verbal Reasoning, two sections of Quantitative Reasoning, and one section that won’t count toward your scores (you won’t know which section this is, so try your best on all the GRE questions).
For each Verbal Reasoning section, you will have 30 minutes to answer 20 multiple-choice questions. For each Quantitative Reasoning section, you will have 35 minutes to answer 20 multiple-choice and write-in questions. Your practice GRE tests should match this format as closely as possible.
Additionally, the GRE is also section adaptive. This means your score on the first Verbal and Quantitative sections determine the difficulty level of the second Verbal and Quantitative sections. Many practice GREs, especially free ones, aren’t section adaptive because it’s more work for the test creators, but those that are give you slightly more accurate scores because they’re that much more similar to the actual GRE.
#3: Strong Answer Explanations
It’s not enough to have great GRE practice questions; those questions also need to be accompanied by in-depth answer explanations. If the answer explanations are brief or non-existent, that can make it difficult for you to understand what you’re doing wrong and learn from your mistakes.
The best answer explanations will clearly explain how to get the correct answer while also going over common mistakes students can make that lead them to an incorrect answer.
#4: Easy to Use
Finally, GRE practice tests should be easy to use. If a practice test has a clunky interface or requires a lot of steps before you can access the test, that increases your frustration and takes time away from actual GRE practice. The GRE exam is already nearly four hours long; you don’t need to spend extra time struggling with a poorly-designed practice GRE.
The Best Free GRE Practice Tests
Below are the best free online GRE practice tests available. For each of them we include a description of the exam(s) as well as pros and cons. They’re roughly ordered from highest quality to lowest quality, although even the less-than-perfect exams are worth using.
PowerPrep II
If you only have time to take one or two practice GRE tests, it should be these. PowerPrep II is one of the best GRE study materials available. All you need to do is download the software to get access to two complete practice GREs. These are official practice exams, which means they’re made by the same people who make the real GRE you’ll take on exam day. Official practice tests are the best to use because you can be sure they have the same format, content, timing, and difficulty level as the actual GRE.
The main drawback to these exams is that they don’t include answer explanations, but they’re still a great resource.
Pros:
Cons:
ETS Paper Exams
ETS, the maker of the GRE, has also released retired GREs. These are official tests that were used several years ago, so, like the PowerPrep tests, the questions will be very similar to the GRE you take on exam day. There are currently two PDF exams available:
These exams overlap many questions with the PowerPrep tests, so we recommend taking the PowerPrep tests first and using these to practice any of the questions you haven’t already seen.
Pros:
Cons:
Manhattan Prep Free GRE Practice Test
Manhattan Prep’s free GRE test is one of the best unofficial free GRE’s available. You’ll need to create a free account, but once you do you can access the practice test. The practice questions are high-quality for an unofficial resource, and the format of the exam is very similar to what you’ll see on test day. As an added bonus, this exam has some of the most in-depth answer explanations available for free GREs, so it’s a great resource if you’re struggling to understand why you get certain questions wrong.
Pros:
Cons:
Kaplan Free GRE Practice Test
You can get another free online GRE practice test from Kaplan. This exam is similar to Manhattan Prep’s, and it does a pretty good job of replicating the format and types of questions you see on the GRE. However, its answer explanations are not as robust as Manhattan Prep’s are.
Pros:
Cons:
Princeton Review Free GRE Practice Test
Princeton Review offers one free online GRE practice test on its website. You’ll need to create a free account to access the test, and once you create your account, you’ll only have free access to the test for 14 days. Like Manhattan Prep’s and Kaplan’s tests, this practice exam has the same timing and format as the real GRE, and the computer interface is very similar to what you’ll see on test day.
![]()
However, after you take the text, you’ll get a score sheet that shows which question numbers you got right and wrong, but you won’t be able to look at the questions again, and there are no answer explanations. Since you can’t review the questions you missed, that makes it very hard to learn from your mistakes. We recommend this test if you feel pretty confident in your GRE skills and want a practice test to just get an idea of how well you’re scoring, without answer explanations.
Pros:
Cons:
McGraw Hill Free GRE Practice Test
McGraw Hill also offers a free diagnostic GRE test (which has one Verbal and one Quantitative section), as well as five additional practice tests. The questions are pretty high quality, but the format is different from the actual GRE, so we recommend saving these until you’ve taken the other GRE practice tests. You can also take one section at a time during times when you want to study for the GRE but don’t have time to take a complete practice test.

Spread the Practice Tests Throughout Your Study PeriodGre Books Free Download Pdf
You should take at least two practice GREs, and we recommend three to four if you have time for it. Take one practice test at the beginning of your studying so you can get an idea of how much you need to improve and in what areas you should focus most of your studying, and take another practice test at the end so you have a rough idea of how well you’ll do on the actual GRE.
If you have time to take additional practice tests, space them out throughout your studying so you get a regular update of how well you’re doing. We recommend taking one PowerPrep test at the beginning and the other at the end of your studying since these are the most accurate. Take unofficial practice tests like the Manhattan Prep exam in the middle of your study period.
Take the Test With Correct Timing, and in One Sitting
Many of these free GRE tests give you the option to take the test either timed or untimed. You should always take the practice tests timed and in one sitting, the same way you’ll take the actual GRE. This will help prepare you for the exam by getting used to taking a long exam with strict timing conditions.
If you take long breaks between sections or give yourself extra time to solve problems on the practice tests, your practice test score won’t be an accurate estimate of how well you’ll do on the real GRE, and you won’t be preparing yourself well. Always use the timed option if it’s available, and stick to it while you’re taking the test.
Review Your Mistakes
After you finish your free GRE test, your work isn’t done yet. For every practice test you take, you should review each of the questions you got wrong so you can understand what you did incorrectly. This can be tedious and time consuming, but it’s the best way to improve your GRE score. Otherwise, you’ll keep making the same mistakes because you won’t learn what you’re doing incorrectly.
If you find you’re getting many questions on certain topics wrong, you can review those topics in GRE prep books or with additional study materials.
Summary: The Best Free Online GRE Practice Tests
Practice tests are an essential part of your GRE prep, and you should only use the highest quality tests when you’re studying. Make sure you GRE free practice tests have high-quality practice questions, a similar format to the real GRE, in-depth answer explanations, and are easy to use.
For free online GRE practice tests, we recommend using the two PowerPrep tests first since they are closest to the actual GRE. Additional official and unofficial practice tests can be used afterwards. When taking a free GRE practice test online, spread the practice tests throughout your study period, take the test with proper timing, and review the questions you answered incorrectly so you understand where you made mistakes.
